Logan & Kanawha Coal Company

 HISTORY

Founded in 1915 in Cincinnati, Ohio, Logan & Kanawha Coal Company, LLC. has been serving the coal industry for over 80 years. L&K has sold over 250,000,000 tons of coal in its first 80 years of business.

Logan & Kanawha Coal was formed as a sales vehicle to market the coal owned by officers of the company. This production was located in West Virginia. After years of operation, these mines were sold to other coal companies.

L&K acted as the sales agent for numerous small producers who lacked the expertise and financial strength to reach the various coal markets. This sales representation developed into several long term contractual relationships with domestic utilities.

Utility and industrial customers could purchase a variety of products through various modes of transportation from a single coal company.

 TRANSITION

In 1986, James H. "Buck" Harless purchased L&K. This began a phase of building for International Industries Inc. Hampden Coal Company was subsequently opened in 1987. Two additional properties were purchased in 1994 with production capabilities of nearly 10,000,000 tons per year. Rockhouse Coal reserves were acquired in 1995 with production of 1,500,000 tons per year set to begin in 1997.  International Resources, LLC was purchased by Lightfoot Capital in 2007.

The primary focus for L&K was sales of "company" production. This total production base will enable L&K to compete in more market sectors than prior production would support.
